As defined by the American College of Surgeons, the Surgical First Assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. This role will vary considerably with the surgical operation, specialty area, and type of facility. Clinical skills performed under direct supervision of the surgeon may include the following: positioning the patient, preparing the skin, providing visualization of the operative site, etc.

First Assistant Programs

Accelerated First Assistant Program

The accelerated online first assistant program is designed for individuals with a deadline to meet. The accelerated version is the same information and requirements as the 12-month version. We have removed the pacing system in the accelerated version to give students full access to all the coursework at one time. Students may take exams at any time however exams cannot be taken out of sequence.

Standard First Assistant Program

The standard first assistant program is 12 months in length. This version has a pacing system in place which opens up new material every 7 days. For those students that maintain the pacing schedule, it’s very possible to complete coursework and program with in 9 to 10 months.

Program Requirement

  • Surgical Technologist (ST) or Operating Room Nurse or Physician Assistant (PA) or Medical Doctor (MD) (Copy of Certification or License).
  • Minimum 2 years of O.R experience recommended but not required.
  • Proof of professional liability insurance minimum of $1,000,000. If requested by clinical rotation facility.
  • Current CPR or BLS certification if requested by clinical rotation facility.
  • Acceptable health and immunization records (MMR, TB, Hep-B) If requested by clinical rotation facility.
  • Access to the Internet (High-speed broadband connection recommended – DSL, Cable, Satellite, or Wireless).
  • Web browser: Internet Explorer 11, Firefox or Chrome; Safari for Macs; (AOL is not supported).
  • An email account.
  • Microsoft Office 2007 or later, including Microsoft PowerPoint & Microsoft Word.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.0 or later (for PDF files).
